Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie has publicly apologized following backlash over his remarks questioning the credibility of images and the legitimacy of protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
In a handwritten letter issued on Monday, Kiarie expressed regret for his remarks during the heated parliamentary debate on the bill. He acknowledged the widespread anger and frustration in the nation, stemming from longstanding unresolved issues.
Kiarie began his apology by stating,“I truly apologise for comments I made regarding the protest and the authenticity of certain images,” Kiarie began.He admitted that his words were “unnecessary, misguided and insensitive” given the context of the Finance Bill debate.
“In the heat of the moment, during the debate on the Finance Bill, my words were unnecessary, misguided and insensitive,” he added.
Reflecting on his past involvement in movements for social justice and good governance, Kiarie emphasized the importance of vigilance and public activism for a better Kenya. He recognized the youth’s role in advocating change through social media and other innovative platforms.
The MP praised the courage and creativity of the younger generation and sincerely apologized for any offense caused by his statements.
Concluding his apology, Kiarie expressed that he has learned from the experience and from actively listening to feedback since the incident.
“I have definitely learnt a lot from this and also from all the active listening I have done since,” he wrote.
The apology comes amidst substantial online criticism, with many accusing Kiarie of dismissing the genuine concerns of protesters. Initially, he had suggested that the protests were fabricated and questioned the authenticity of some shared photos.
This incident underscores the growing unrest and the determination of Kenyan youth to bring about change, regardless of tribal or political affiliations. Government efforts to discredit the protests have only intensified public anger.
