YouTube has confirmed a major update to how views are measured on the platform. In an announcement on Monday, August 17, the company revealed that every video format will now follow the same view-counting standard that was introduced for Shorts last year.
“Last year, we updated how we count public views for Shorts to better capture how viewers watch on YouTube. Now, we’re aligning all other video formats to this same standard for consistency across the platform,” the statement read.
When Does the New YouTube View Count Rule Start?
Starting August 24, 2026, YouTube will count a view as soon as a video begins to play — from the very first frame. The rule will apply globally to all formats, including long-form videos, live streams, and Shorts.
“Beginning on 8/24/2026, a view will be counted the moment a video begins to play – from the very first frame. This standard will now apply globally across all formats,” the statement added.
Why Is YouTube Changing Its View Counting System?
Previously, YouTube used different counting methods depending on the video format, which led to confusion among creators trying to understand their performance.
The company said the update is a direct response to creator feedback requesting clearer metrics and a more accurate picture of real exposure.
“Historically, we’ve used multiple view counting systems across different formats. However, we’ve heard that creators want to eliminate this metric confusion and accurately understand their true exposure, which is why we’re making this update,” the statement further read.
Engaged Views Will Still Be Available
Creators will not lose access to the previous view metric. It will remain in YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode and will be renamed “Engaged views.” This data will show how many viewers chose to continue watching a video after it started.
“We’ll keep the original view metric, called “Engaged views,” in YouTube Analytics > Advanced Mode so creators can see how many viewers choose to continue watching their video,” the statement explained.
Will This Affect Earnings or YouTube Partner Program Eligibility?
No. YouTube confirmed that creator earnings and YouTube Partner Program entry requirements will not change. Earnings will continue to be calculated using engaged views and watch hours. However, some requirement labels will be updated:
