A shocking incident has come to light involving Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who currently resides in Kenya. The long-distance runner, known for finishing 44th at the 2024 Paris Olympics, was brutally attacked and set on fire by her boyfriend, according to police reports.
The horrific event occurred at Cheptegei’s home in Trans Nzoia County, located in western Kenya. According to Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom, Cheptegei’s boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, purchased a jerrican of petrol and, during a heated argument, poured it on her before setting her on fire.
The attack left Cheptegei with burns covering 75% of her body. Ndiema also sustained burn injuries during the incident.
Both Cheptegei and Ndiema are currently receiving specialized treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city, where they are being treated for their severe injuries.
Cheptegei’s parents revealed that their daughter had purchased land in Trans Nzoia to be closer to the county’s renowned athletic training centers.
However, a report filed by the local chief indicated that the couple had been arguing over the ownership of the land where Cheptegei’s house is built, which may have triggered the violent altercation.
This tragic incident follows a disturbing trend of violence against athletes in the region. In 2023, Ugandan Olympic runner and steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead with stab wounds.
Similarly, in 2022, Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete Damaris Muthee was found dead, with a postmortem revealing that she had been strangled.
The attack on Cheptegei has sparked outrage and concern among the athletic community and the public, highlighting the urgent need for addressing domestic violence and ensuring the safety of athletes.
