Mumias East MP Peter Salasya recently shared his June payslip on Facebook, revealing a stark contrast from his initial salary of over Sh1.1 million to a net income of just Sh2,364.

In his post, Salasya raised concerns about the adequacy of his salary, questioning how other professionals like teachers and doctors fare if his earnings are so minimal, “This is my salary. If mine looks like this, what about those of teachers and doctors?”

His payslip outlined several components: a basic salary of Sh435,301, an administrative allowance of Sh140,201, a house allowance of Sh150,000, and a sitting allowance of Sh67,500.

Added to this were a telephone allowance of Sh15,000 and a vehicle fixed cost of Sh356,525, totaling Sh1,164,527.

However, significant deductions followed, including Sh360,466 for PAYE, Sh541,947 for a mortgage, Sh54,847 for staff pension fund contributions, Sh16,455 for the Housing Levy, and Sh1,700 for NHIF.

Further deductions included Sh85,981 for a car loan, Sh4,640 for ration and mess, Sh5,000 for the Kenya Young Parliament Association (KYPA), Sh10,000 each for Sacco deposits and housing shares, Sh70,000 for Pacoso shares, and Sh1,124 for car loan life insurance.

These deductions summed up to Sh1,162,162, leaving Salasya with a net pay of Sh2,364.

In response to queries about his financial management, Salasya emphasized his efforts to sustain himself, suggesting potential daily earnings through investments despite mortgage commitments.

His reflections sparked discussions on the financial realities faced by public servants.
