Brenda Biya, the 26-year-old daughter of Cameroon’s long-standing president, Paul Biya, recently took to Instagram to share a heartfelt photo with Brazilian model Layyons Valença.
In the post, Brenda is seen kissing Valença, with a caption expressing her deep affection: “I’m crazy about you & I want the world to know.”
The post has stirred a variety of reactions in Cameroon, a country where same-sex relationships remain illegal and can lead to a prison sentence of up to five years.
President Paul Biya, Brenda’s father, has been in power since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders at 91 years old.
Cameroon enforces strict laws against same-sex relationships, with penalties of up to five years in prison for those found guilty.
Although Brenda Biya, who performs music under the stage name King Nasty and lives abroad, didn’t explicitly declare her sexuality, the post is seen as a bold move.
She later shared an article from French newspaper Le Monde, which reported on her “coming out.”
Following the Instagram post, Brenda Biya also posted messages of support from various individuals, amplifying the conversation surrounding her statement.
