North Korea Kim Jong Un, has pledged to deploy three additional surveillance satellites, manufacture military drones, and enhance its nuclear capabilities in 2024.
This commitment comes as leader Kim Jong Un asserted that U.S. policies are pushing towards an inevitable war, according to reports from state media.
Mr. Kim strongly criticized Washington in an extensive statement on Sunday, concluding five days of ruling party gatherings that outlined economic, military, and foreign policy objectives for the upcoming year.
“Because of reckless moves by the enemies to invade us, it is a fait accompli that a war can break out at any time on the Korean peninsula,” he said, according to state news agency KCNA.
He directed the military to ready themselves for “pacify the entire territory of South Korea,” even contemplating the use of nuclear weapons if required, as a reaction to any potential assault.
Mr. Kim’s address precedes a significant year marked by crucial elections in both South Korea and the United States.
Analysts anticipate that North Korea will persist in employing military tactics to enhance its influence, particularly in the lead-up to the US presidential elections in November.
This period might witness the potential return of former President Donald Trump, known for engaging in both confrontational rhetoric and landmark diplomatic efforts with Mr. Kim.
“Pyongyang might be waiting out the US presidential election to see what its provocations can buy it with the next administration,” Leif-Eric Easley, professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, said.
The Biden administration expresses a willingness to engage in discussions, yet it enforces fresh sanctions while North Korea continues prohibited missile tests.
In addition, the United States has escalated military exercises and positioned additional assets, including nuclear submarines and large aircraft carriers, in proximity to the Korean peninsula.
Kim emphasizes his concern about the reintroduction of these weapons, contending that they have turned South Korea into a “forward military base and nuclear arsenal” for the United States.
“If we look closely at the confrontational military actions by the enemy forces …. the word ‘war’ has become a realistic reality and not an abstract concept,” Mr Kim said.
Mr. Kim asserted that he must proceed with his nuclear aspirations and strengthen alliances with nations opposed to the United States, as North Korea maintains strong connections with both China and Russia.
