A heavy security operation unfolded at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega Town on Saturday morning, as police lobbed teargas to disperse crowds gathering ahead of the anticipated ‘Linda Mwananchi’ rally.
The incident occurred just hours before the political gathering was scheduled to commence. Anti-riot police units were deployed to the venue early in the morning, establishing a strong presence as small groups of attendees began to assemble.
According to witnesses, the atmosphere turned chaotic when law enforcement launched teargas canisters into sections of the crowd, forcing protesters and bystanders to flee the immediate area for safety.
Security has since been heightened throughout the town in response to the planned meeting, which had garnered significant public attention and political interest.
By mid-morning, police had cordoned off large sections of the grounds and sealed major access roads leading to the venue. A visible contingent of officers remained on standby to prevent what they termed “unauthorized gatherings.”
Authorities have reiterated that any public assembly must comply with the provisions of the Public Order Act. The law requires rally organizers to formally notify the police prior to the event to allow for adequate security planning and risk assessment.
It remains unclear whether the required notice was provided for the ‘Linda Mwananchi’ rally.
The opposition-led ‘Linda Mwananchi’ movement was expected to draw a large crowd of supporters and political figures.
