Kenya – In a frustrating turn of events for thousands of Kenyans, the government’s centralized digital payments and services hub, eCitizen, experienced a significant system outage today, bringing critical administrative processes to a screeching halt.
Users attempting to access the platform to apply for passports, make payments for official documents, or utilize other essential services were met with error messages and login failures.
The disruption sparked an immediate outcry on social media, where frustrated citizens reported being locked out of their accounts despite entering the correct credentials.
Huduma Kenya Responds to Public Uproar
As the complaints flooded timelines, Huduma Kenya moved quickly to acknowledge the technical glitch. In response to concerned users on social media, the agency advised patience, stating that the was experiencing technical difficulties.
“Kindly note eCitizen is experiencing system downtime, kindly try later,” the agency posted, assuring the public that the technical team was likely working to restore normalcy.
The outage highlights the country’s heavy reliance on the eCitizen platform, which has become the single gateway for accessing a wide array of government services online.
Any disruption to the system effectively paralyzes access to these essential functions, affecting individuals and businesses alike.
Auditor General’s Office Dismisses Massive Fraud Allegations
The technical crash comes just one day after the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) was forced to issue a statement distancing itself from viral social media reports alleging massive financial losses on the platform.
On Tuesday, March 3, the OAG flagged circulating reports claiming that Ksh1.3 trillion had been lost or was unaccounted for from the eCitizen platform as categorically fake.
“Our attention has been drawn to information circulating on social media citing Auditor-General’s Report as the source of Ksh1.3 Trillion allegedly lost or unaccounted for. This information is misleading as it has not emanated from the Office of the Auditor-General,” the statement read.
The OAG urged the public to disregard the “misleading” information, which had begun to gain traction online.
As of the time of this report, it remains unclear when the eCitizen services will be fully restored. Users are advised to attempt access later or monitor Huduma Kenya’s official channels for further updates.
