While the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Leopards saw their Africa Cup of Nations dream end in a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Algeria, the tournament’s most unforgettable image was not a goal, but a fan. Michel “Kuka” Mboladinga, a supporter who stood motionless as a statue through every match, has become the enduring symbol of DR Congo’s 2023 campaign, weaving together threads of football passion, national history, and a poignant plea for peace.
The Living Monument
Throughout DR Congo’s matches, Kuka captivated global audiences. Colorfully dressed and utterly immobile, he stood with his right arm raised, palm open, and gaze fixed on the sky. This was no mere stunt.
His pose is a direct homage to the statue of Patrice Lumumba that stands in Kinshasa. Lumumba, the nation’s first prime minister and a martyr of its independence, was assassinated in 1961 in a crime that involved Belgian mercenaries and Katangan separatists—a dark chapter in Congo’s history.
For Congolese fans, Kuka’s silent performance was a powerful act of remembrance. “He has chosen to imitate Lumumba… our hero. That is why we chant his name,” said supporter Laetitia Malula in Casablanca.
Kuka transformed the stands into a living memorial, reminding the world of a foundational, yet tragically severed, figure in the nation’s story.
A Symbol Transcending Sport
Kuka’s impact was so profound that the Congolese government funded a delegation of hundreds of supporters to accompany him in Morocco for the knockout stages.
Though he retreated from media interviews, overwhelmed by the spotlight, his message was amplified by those around him.
Jered Bitobo, communications head for his supporters’ group, framed the pose as “a sign of peace.” In a country grappling with a devastating conflict in its eastern regions, fueled by the resurgence of the Rwandan-backed M23 group, Kuka’s open palm carried profound meaning.
“He is sending out a strong message, both at local and international level. We need peace in our country,” Bitobo explained.
Legacy Beyond the Final Whistle
Originating from his support for Congolese giants AS Vita Club years ago, Kuka’s tribute found its global stage at AFCON. It demonstrated how football fandom can be a vessel for historical consciousness and political expression.
His silent vigil honored a past hero while casting a quiet, urgent shadow over the present-day struggles of the DRC.
