South African Afro-pop singer Bulelwa Mkutukana, popularly known as Zahara, has died at age 36.
The ‘Loliwe’ hitmaker, who was hospitalized, died on Monday night due to reported liver complications.
Zizi Kodwa, the Culture Minister, mentioned that she had been hospitalized due to liver complications, and the government had been providing support to the family for an extended period.
In 2019, Zahara opened up about her battle with alcohol addiction.
“Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music,” Mr Kodwa posted on X, formerly Twitter.
The family announced last month that the musician had been hospitalized, urging South Africans to include her in their prayers.
According to SABC, she died on Monday night at the age of 36 in a Johannesburg hospital.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his sadness at the death of award-winning singer Zahara.
“We have been robbed of great talent. She was talented, vibrant and a wonderful composer and to be robbed of that talent, at her young age, is a real blow to our country.
