President Museveni endorses 86-year-old Gen Moses Ali for Final Parliamentary Term in Adjumani West

KAMPALA – President Yoweri Museveni has officially endorsed General Moses Ali as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s candidate for the Adjumani West constituency in the 2026 general elections.

The President presented the party flag to Gen. Ali on Monday, solidifying the veteran politician’s bid for a new term. The election is scheduled for January 15, 2026.

This endorsement sets the stage for what Gen. Ali’s camp has stated will be his final parliamentary campaign. The General has been a dominant force in Adjumani West politics, securing victory in every parliamentary race since 2001, with the sole exception of the 2006 election.

A Political Stronghold

The Adjumani district is considered a reliable base for the NRM. In the last presidential election, President Museveni garnered a commanding 75.67% of the vote in the constituency, underscoring the party’s strong influence in the region.

A Long and Storied Career

Gen. Moses Ali is a prominent and long-serving figure in Uganda’s military and political history. Born in 1939, he joined the army young and received advanced military training abroad, leading to a rapid rise through the ranks in the 1970s.

He held cabinet positions under former President Idi Amin but later fell out with the regime. Following Amin’s fall, Ali went into exile and led the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebel group.

In a significant political shift, he reconciled with President Museveni in 1986. His rebel forces were integrated into the national army, and he was granted the rank of Major General. He has since been promoted, reaching the rank of General in 2012, while simultaneously serving as a legislator and government minister.

This 2026 race is positioned as the culmination of his long and multifaceted career in public service.
