Azimio Leader Raila Odinga and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi provided a significant update on Wednesday regarding Odinga’s candidacy for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
During a joint press conference held at Mudavadi’s office in the Kenya Railways headquarters, Nairobi, the Azimio Principal praised President William Ruto for his proactive efforts in rallying support from African leaders.
Raila Odinga emphasized that William Ruto’s involvement in the bid is driven by the broader interests of Kenya and Africa, rather than personal political motives.
Odinga praised the government’s backing and highlighted that effective coordination between his team and state officials would be crucial to securing the top position.
“We are in this as Kenya and not as individual political parties. We have agreed on the need for efficiency and the need to cut bureaucracy” Raila Odinga stated.
“With commitment and proper coordination between my team and the government, we should be able to clinch the AUC position,” he added.
The Azimio leader expressed his appreciation to numerous government officials who unexpectedly pledged to support his candidacy.
Meanwhile, Mudavadi confirmed the government’s unwavering support for Raila in his bid for the AU Commission seat, despite differing political views.
Mudavadi highlighted that President William Ruto fully backs Odinga’s candidacy and will persist in rallying the necessary support to secure Raila’s victory.
“The candidate’s endeavour and leadership align with the AU Commission’s values of efficiency, professionalism and respect for diversity,” Mudavadi noted.
“We have no doubt the candidate will pursue excellence in line with the continent’s collective aspiration of the Africa we want in 2063 as framed in the AU’s development agenda,” he added.
Mudavadi has revealed that a dedicated team, consisting of Raila’s political allies and select government officials, has been established to support the campaign efforts.
