Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s political comeback has taken another hit after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission revoked his clearance to run for Mombasa Governor on Monday.
The IEBC stated in a statement issued on Monday that the decision was reached following the Apex Court’s decision that he could not hold any public office due to his impeachment.
“In adherence to the Supreme Court judgment you are therefore disqualified from holding any public office and thus disqualified from contesting and being elected as the governor of Mombasa or any other county. Your candidature is invalidated and your certificate revoked,” reads the letter.
The Supreme Court on Friday upheld the Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold the former Nairobi Governor’s impeachment.
Following a High Court order, Mombasa County Returning Officer Swalhah Ibrahim Yusuf cleared Sonko for the gubernatorial election two days before the Supreme Court ruling.
According to the order, the former governor had not exhausted all legal channels, so he was barred from running in the Mombasa election.
