Unveiling the Alarming Truth: 9 Counties with the Highest HIV Prevalence Exposed in New Report

A study conducted by the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC) has shown that HIV infections have risen in nine counties in Kenya.

The Nyanza region has experienced the highest increase in HIV prevalence, while the coastal region and arid and semi-arid lands (Asals) have also reported a rise in cases.

Every county in Nyanza saw a rise in HIV prevalence, with the exception of Nyamira County.

Homa Bay County witnessed the highest increase at 15.2 percent, closely trailed by Kisumu, which had a 14.5 percent increase.

Several Nyanza counties, such as Siaya (with a 13.2 percent rise), Migori (experiencing a 9.7 percent increase), and Kisii (with a 4.4 percent uptick), have also seen growth in infection rates.

NSDCC program officer Douglas Bosire pointed out that the sudden spike in infections in the Nyanza region can be attributed to cultural factors.

The NSDCC’s report indicated a rising trend in infections along the coastal region, with Mombasa leading the way with a 4.6 percent increase.

Samburu experienced a 4.3 percent uptick in new infections, primarily due to limited adoption of modern medicine.

It is possible that the actual numbers of cases in ASAL regions might be higher than reported, as many individuals avoid testing due to the stigma associated with it.

Additionally, Vihiga and Uasin Gishu Counties also saw an increase in cases, with rates of 4.2 and 3.7 percent, respectively.

The country is falling behind in its goal to eradicate HIV infections by 2027 because the majority of new cases are occurring in the younger population.

Based on statistics from the Ministry of Health, 61% of all recent infections are among Kenyans aged 29 and younger.
