Susan Auma, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development, appealed to the public for assistance in locating a Hawker whose merchandise was ruined by Nairobi County enforcement officers, commonly referred to as kanjos.
The online video that went viral, showing the street vendor sobbing inconsolably following the destruction of his merchandise by the authorities, provoked a variety of responses.
On Wednesday, she criticized the occurrence and called on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to initiate a strong effort to eliminate unruly enforcement officers.
“Dear compatriots, I implore your assistance in locating this hustler whose endeavors and livelihoods have been detrimentally impacted,” she stated.
The PS urged Sakaja to incorporate and legitimize micro and small businesses, as well as establish secure operational areas for them.
PS Auma emphasized that fostering a favorable atmosphere for SMEs was crucial for cultivating young entrepreneurs and benefiting the country.
“Effective leadership necessitates the provision of guidance and viable alternatives. Let us champion the significance of small businesses in pursuit of delivering the plan,” she added.
Some Kenyans joined PS Auma in denouncing the actions of county officials and the underlying motive that led them to endanger the livelihoods of street vendors.
