John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu, a renowned Nigerian actor, faced a distressing situation as two of his children, Daniel Okafor and adopted daughter Jasmine Chioma, were arrested in Lagos for allegedly embezzling $60,700 from funds raised for his hospital fees last year.
Mr Ibu, 62, underwent a leg amputation in November, with fans contributing to a crowdfunding initiative.
The siblings are accused of hacking into their father’s phone, installing an app, and transferring funds.
The police confirmed their arrest and ongoing investigation, revealing that the duo could be released on a $17,000 bond.
Despite a court hearing, they remain in custody, scheduled to appear in court on March 11.
Mr Ibu’s health struggles became public in October, prompting a significant response from fans.
The actor gained fame in the Nigerian comedy “Mr Ibu” and has enjoyed a prolific career in Nollywood for over two decades, with a total of 13 children, some adopted.
