Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has urged the Kenyan government to temporarily revoke the visa of South African politician Julius Malema due to his criticism of President William Ruto.
Malema, leader of the EFF, visited Kenya last week and expressed disapproval of Ruto’s changing positions, unfulfilled campaign promises, and departure from his pre-election stance in the face of the escalating cost of living.
The senator asserted during a Sunday church service in Nandi County that Malema’s comments had demeaned President Ruto.
”We are giving Malema the next five days to make an unreserved apology to the President and the Government and he should never be given a passport and a Visa to come to Kenya,” the Senator said during the church service.
”I want to ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to demand an apology from Julius Malema and EFF of South Africa and deny him Visa and passport from coming to Kenya,” the Senator further stated
Cherargey asserts that Malema’s comments were a disrespect to both the Presidency and the nation of Kenya.
The Senator’s comments follow Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s criticism of the South African politician for attacking Ruto.
Gachagua questions the justification for Malema’s remarks, pointing out similarities in the challenges faced by South Africa.
”I heard a certain leader from South Africa criticizing the government. I was in South Africa and they ration electricity for 7 hours but I did not criticize them,” Gachagua stated.
While in Kenya to inaugurate the Pan African Institute at Lukenya University, Malema revised his previous statements urging Azimio leader Raila Odinga to acknowledge the 2022 election results and endorse Ruto.
The outspoken EFF leader expressed his dissatisfaction with President William Ruto’s failure to fulfill his commitments.
“I don’t know if President William Ruto means it because he said so many things, and I can’t locate him these days, because the things he said during the election and the things he’s doing now are two different things,” he stated.
