Lodwar fresh produce and retail market expansion works officially commence

County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Gender and Youth Affairs Jennipher Nawoi today led ministry officials and other stakeholders in a brief site handover ceremony for expansion of Lodwar fresh produce and retail market to the awarded contractor.

The expansion works which is part of the integrated market within the Lodwar Township ward will be done at a total cost of Kshs. 30 million.

In her remarks, CECM Nawoi said that the expansion works, which includes construction of two markets sheds and a perimeter wall, will give a facelift to the market and accommodate 120 more traders through creation of more space for the vendors, whilst increasing revenue to the County Government.

She further assured traders of the County Government commitment to provide a favourable environment for business to thrive in an effort to improve the economic livelihood of youth and women, who are a majority in the market.

She reiterated her department’s focus on offering effective service delivery through close co-ordination with the Small and medium-sized enterprises through regular trainings and workshops on business skills development.

The County Executive urged traders to observe hygiene at the market by regularly washing their hands to prevent the spread of COVID-19 that has been declared pandemic by World Health organization (WHO).

On his part County Chief Officer for Trade Dr. Michael Eregae said the current investment on the market infrastructure will address the current congestion and the insecurity challenges occasioned by the street children in the vicinity of the market. He revealed that similar works will be replicated in all the sub-counties, with construction of Lokitaung’ market sheds to be launched next week.

Also present were Director of Trade, Industrialization & Enterprise Development James Lokwale; Internal Trade Deputy Director Wilson Ejiye, Turkana Central Deputy Sub-County Administrator Esther Lokitoe, Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Turkana Chapter Chairperson Pius Ewoton Atok and a host County Government officers drawn from the departments of Public Service, Lands & Physical Planning and Public Works.
